It takes a hard and capable sort to hold a band of cutthroats together, and the Bandit Captain is exactly that: a veteran fighter, better armed and better armored than the rabble they command, holding their crew in line by force of will and the occasional example. Kill the Captain and the band often breaks; that is precisely why a party that means to clear a road learns to cut its way to the leader. Many a Captain has a price on their head in the nearest town, which makes the work pay twice.
