The Hobgoblin Captain is no mere biggest-brute-in-the-warren; it is a genuine commander, a veteran of the hobgoblin way of war who holds its company together with discipline, tactics, and an iron expectation of obedience. Under a good Captain a hobgoblin company manoeuvres, flanks, and holds reserves like a proper army in miniature. They are armored in well-kept mail, fight with skill rather than fury, and a party facing one is facing not a monster but a general, which is a different and harder problem.
