The Lorekeeper's Tome

Caelvarro the Watcher

Person
Caelvarro the Watcher is remembered for a single observation that no one before him had thought to make. For an age, the people of the Reach had looked at the night sky and seen what they had always seen - the warm Living Sun gone to its rest, the Pale Sister in her phases, and the lightless Dark Sun ringed by its faint Crown of Fire - and thought nothing of it, for the sky was simply the sky. Caelvarro looked longer. Across years of patient watching he became certain of a thing that should have been impossible: the Crown of Fire was not constant. It waxed and waned, brightened and dimmed, across spans of years - slowly, very slowly, but unmistakably to one who kept the count. And so, true to his creed, he began the count. He set down the Crown's aspect, dated, season by season, and taught his successors to continue it, and the Lorekeepers have kept that long ledger of the Dark Sun's ring from his day to this. Caelvarro never claimed to know what the changing meant - that was not his place; he was a watcher, not a seer. He only saw that it changed, and judged that someone had better be writing it down. Whether he was right to fear it, the long ledger may yet decide.
