The Lorekeeper's Tome

The Athenaeum

Place · Western Reach
The Athenaeum is the seat of the Lorekeepers and the home of their long work: a great library raised in the scholarly city of Velmoryn, in the Western Reach, where three thousand years of patient record are kept in stone and ink against the day the world might otherwise forget again. It is less a single building than a grown thing, expanded by every generation of keepers that has needed more room for its watching - hall added to hall, vault sunk beneath vault, until the whole has become a quiet labyrinth of shelves where a scholar might wander for a lifetime and not read the half of it. What it holds is not grand. There are no Builder-wonders here, no relics, no secrets of power - only the plain accumulated observation of three thousand years: who ruled and when they fell, where the rivers ran before they shifted, what the sky did in a given year, the small dated facts of an age set down by keepers who mostly never knew which of their entries would matter. Yet it is, for that very reason, the most precious place in the Reach, for it is the one place the world keeps its memory whole. Velmoryn guards it, scholars come to it from across the island, and the Lorekeepers tend it as their forebears have for a hundred generations - adding, always adding, to the long record that no single one of them will ever see the end of.
