The Veil

The Veil is the divine art of the Pale Sister, and like her light it is a borrowed and mingled thing - part warmth of the Living Sun, part fire of the Crown, never the dark itself. It is neither the Cathedral's mending nor the Unmakers' undoing but something quieter and stranger between them: a two-natured magic, in which a single working may soothe and unsettle at once, or fall gently on the living and terribly on the dead. A worker of the Veil does not pull a soul back from death so much as govern the threshold itself - easing a crossing, laying the restless to their rest, warding the living against the dead, shrouding the desperate in the moon's grey dimness. Those few who give their lives to its study are called Veilweavers, and they are rare and little understood, for the Cathedral mislikes any light it did not bless, and the Veil is kept softly, out of its sight, as the Greyfallen keep their mournful vigils.
